The Rodent: First Impressions

">

It isn’t very often that I come across a lure that looks so good I don’t even want to use it. The Rodent, by Bettencourt Baits is one such lure. Fishing lures simply do not get much more realistic then this. As soon as I took the 5 inch, 7/8 ounce Rodent out of the package, the high level of quality was apparent. The Rodent was clearly built by very skilled artisan.

I’ll be putting this beautiful lure to the test fishing for hungry spring pike in May. Stay tuned to find out how The Rodent stands up to the fierce jaws and sharp teeth of one of the most fearsome predators in freshwater!

For more information about the The Rodent, visit Bettencourt Baits.

oh wow! It’s got a Plexiglas lip? looks like it’s an underwater jerk-bait and not top-water. Very nice!! Especially the shoe-lace tail!

Araret on April 18th, 2010 @ 8:40 pm jwm

@Araret, the lip looks almost vertical so I don’t think it will actually dive. That said I want to try one of these bad boys on Mystery Lake. Also looks like it would hold spray scents really well, but I dont think they make ones for rodents heh.

Jonathon Marshall on April 18th, 2010 @ 10:00 pm Araret

@ Jon, yeah, it’d definitely hold scent well! I recently got 2 bottles of YUM! scent, the crawfish and shad flavour. I don’t think fish would really care what smell it has, as long as it smells like food! Also, it’s possible to have a very vertical lip that sinks. The lure would just wiggle a lot without moving forward.

Araret on April 18th, 2010 @ 11:58 pm The Popster

Yep, that’s a doozy! JN, are you talkin’ ’bout Mystery Lake, Manitoba?? My Grand-pappy lived a few years in Thompson during the ’60’s – he kept tellin’ us he lived on Beaver Crescent, o’course, we thought he was joshin’ us in that way o’ his. He once told us of a fishin’ trip he took to Mystery Lake – Said that it was a mystery anyone caught anything – ‘cos he got nuttin’ – was never the best angler in the world.

Might have to try one o’ those mousey lures.

that looks pikalicious

@Popster, nope Mystery Lake is a secret location in Ontario that we often fish at.

Jonathon Marshall on April 19th, 2010 @ 12:15 pm The Popster

Well ain’t that funny, a REAL Mystery Lake, that’s probably not even called Mystery Lake and in Ontario to boot!! Well Jonathon, hope you have more luck than my Grand-pappy!!

Ontario makes me think o’ the time I spent photographing the Marbled Godwit on Akimiski Island for a article my boss was writing on the migratory path these beautiful critters take in the Fall (Autumn) – you know they travel as far California, New Mexico and beyond!

We got permission to camp outside of Attawapiskat First Nation by the friendly people that run that community – wonderful experience!

We sailed up the river into James Bay and took the next couple o’ weeks to get some great pictures.

Well JM, I hope you fish well and prosper long.

Great looking patterns! Can’t wait to throw a few at night in the Delaneys come springtime

Troutdawg on April 20th, 2010 @ 3:06 am jwm

Popster; are you a pro photographer? You seem to spend a lot of time shooting photos of birds, is it just a hobby or something more? Do you have a portfolio online?

Jonathon Marshall on April 20th, 2010 @ 1:20 pm The Popster

Well JM, I’m a freelance photog, my main work is done in environmental impact studies, I travel all-over the US and Canada even to Australia to photograph areas that are being considered for development or mining – that sort o’ thing. The work I do is for private companies.

When I do travel, I let the editor of an ornithological magazine know where I’m going and they tell me the bird they want shot and, yup it goes from there.

No, I don’t have a portfolio, don’t know why exactly, just havin’ fun travellin’ and shootin’. Into my 35th year almost at retirement age!! Still shoot mainly on film unless there is a tight deadline, but usually film, develop it myself – ol’ fashion-like.

Funny thing is I was looking up Moose on the ‘net and found this site, I like fishin’ but can’t eat-em.

Y’all have a good day and thanks for takin’ an interest in an old man…he he.

EDITORIALS Buena Suerte Yesterday I went fishing again with Fishermen’s Fleet I didn’t have a partner so I was randomly setup with another guy who was alone. My partner ended up being Mike, pictured holding the two massive tuna (click the image to enlarge), not the same Mike in the featured article below.
