Banker Catches Shark With A Body Inside It

Humphrey Simmons caught more than a shark on his fishing trip with friends when suddenly a huge tiger shark took the bait. Once Simmons was able to bring the shark close enough to the boat one of his friends dispatched the shark with several gun shots. The rest, is pretty disgusting..

It was at that moment the shark regurgitated a human foot. Once back they contacted the authorities that discovered the remains of one headless young man now identified as a missing sailor.

Graphic photos can be found in the original article.

Our Interview with FLW Walleye Angler of the Year Paul Meleen

It was only about a week ago that we posted about our upcoming interview with FLW pro angler Paul Meleen. We asked you, our readers, to submit a few questions you had for Paul and you did! Well, we took those questions with us and got the answers straight from the pro’s mouth! It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to chat with Paul and we’ll be sure to keep a close eye on him come next year on the FLW Walleye tour.

Here’s a quick teaser from our interview, but you’ll have to click through to read the full thing.

Fishing Fury: What do you feel is the overwhelming appeal of walleye that creates such fanatical followers?

Paul Meleen: I think the biggest thing is that walleye fishing is a way of life. It’s been passed on from generation to generation, so it runs in the blood in a way. But another big part of it is the nature of the fish. Walleye can be very finicky. Many other species can be finicky as well, but not like walleye. So I think out of necessity the skill set of your average walleye angler is much more advanced than that of anglers targeting other species.

Inspecting a Used Boat

Now is the time of year when you’re going to get the best deal on a used boat. Folks are packing up their boats for the season, and many are trying to sell off their old boats in hopes of buying a new one at a winter boat show. Before you write that check or call your boat insurance agent, however, you need to make sure you thoroughly inspect the boat.

Inspecting a used boat isn’t like inspecting a used car. There are not tires to kick, and many of the problems may not be apparent. You might even consider hiring an inspector to take a look at the boat before you sign.

Still, if you think you’re up to the task of doing it yourself, here are the things you need to take a look at:

Start with the hull. You’re looking for any obvious damage or leaking. Make sure to check the underneath of the boat, of course. You’re not going to be able to tell whether a boat has a leak with the naked eye, so you’re looking more for things like blatant holes or any sign of rot at this point.Check the steering and cables. You want to make sure that there isn’t any binding when the wheel is turned.Test the electrical controls and pumps. You’ll want to make sure that the controls and lights are all working, as well as your bilge pump, baitwell and fish pumps.Carefully inspect the floor. Look under any carpet. In particular, you’re watching for soft spots. Floors are an extremely expensive replacement. If there’s a problem here, it’s a good sign that the former owner didn’t keep up on his care and maintenance.Look at the engine. If you’re not an expert at how the engine is built or should sound, you really might think about getting a mechanic to look at it. You’ll want to make sure that you start the engine from cold. If the engine is warm before you start it, it could be that the owner is trying to make it seem to be an easier starter than what it is.Take it for a drive. Get it out on the water, and see how it fares. Don’t buy a boat without being able to take it for a spin. This gives you a chance to see how it performs, as well as identify any major leaks.

2010-2011 NOLA Redfish Bonanza is OIL FREE!

Al Keller wrote in to invite me down to New Orleans for some killer redfish, but unfortunately I don’t have the time or the money to make the trip… But maybe you do!

Jonathon,

Thanks for stopping by our booth this year at the Canada Fishing Show. Your site rocks!!

Hope all is well. Attached is the flyer for this years trip to New Orleans. The response has been fantastic so far. Everyone is wanting to come down and see New Orleans after it has been on the news all summer. The fishing is fantastic. We really did luck out with not having oil get into any of the areas that we guide. This honestly might be the best season ever. Please check your calendars and see if any dates will work. Let me know if you have any questions and what I can do to get you HOOKED UP!!

Tight Lines,

5 Best Board Games Involving Boats

It’s entirely possible that you might like board games without ever playing one directly related to boats or boating. Yet some of the best board games which have ever been designed involved ships or boats. Some of them are out of print, but if you like board games and boats, it’s well worth seeing if you can find a copy at a flea market, on eBay, or wherever else you can find old games. One of the best things about board games with boats is that you can control an entire squadron of the world’s most expensive ships without needing any boat insurance.

Here are some of the best board games ever made which involve boats or ships:

Battleship. This is the one most of you are the most likely to have played. The game is quick, fun, and easy to learn. On top of that, you can sink an entire fleet of battleships, destroyers, submarines, and aircraft carriers without making a single boat insurance payment.Wooden Ships & Iron Men. Put out by war gaming giant Avalon Hill (if you’re not familiar with it, you’re not a true geek), this game spanned the great age of sail from the late 1600s through the late 1800s. Statistics are given for hundreds of actual ships of each of the great maritime nations, and players can recreate famous battles, or develop their own.Axis & Allies. While not strictly a boat oriented game, this classic war game incorporates all facets of World War II, giving games the chance to control battleships, aircraft carriers, submarines, and transport ships along with their land based units.Broadsides & Boarding Parties. This game came out in the same series (Hasbro’s Warmasters series) as Axis & Allies, yet never quite reached the level of popularity. It’s kind of a shame, because this naval game offers some of the best naval action of any game we’re played, focusing on the golden age of the buccaneers.Bermuda Triangle. This one can be tough to find, but it’s fun to play if you do get your hands on a copy. The object of the game is to move your boats and airplanes through the Caribbean’s deadly Bermuda Triangle without becoming lost. Think it’s easy? Think again.

5 Great Big Freshwater Game Fish

If you’re a sportsman, you probably use your boat for more then just sunning on the deck. And if fishing is your sport, chances are you’ve always dreamed of catching the big one. You know that one elusive fish that’s bigger than all others. The “one that got away.” If you do go after the big ones, make sure that you’re fully covered with boat insurance and that you have all the equipment you need to land one of those bad boys. Here are some of the biggest freshwater fish you can pursue:

Catfish: believe it or not, there’s some reason to believe these just might be among the biggest things in fresh water. Never mind the stories of Mississippi River divers who refused to go back in the water after allegedly encountering 6-8 foot catfish; in Thailand, anglers actually caught one that was over 9’ long. Unfortunately, big catfish like that don’t take the bait very often.Muskellunge: generally regarded as the largest freshwater fish in North America, muskies typically reach lengths approaching five feet. In most places, you’re only allowed to keep one of them, but that’s OK. Five feet of fish produces a lot of filets. Muskies are generally found in the northern waters of the United States and Canada, particularly in the Great Lakes, though they have been stocked as far south as Georgia.Salmon: 50-60 pound fish are not terribly unusual, and an 85 pound specimen that measured nearly 6 feet in length was captured near Battle Creek, Michigan in recent years. There are several varieties of salmon, with Chinook typically being the largest.Sturgeon: with lengths of 18 feet being reported for Beluga sturgeon, there’s nothing that even comes close to touching the largest specimens outside of salt water. These fish are so prized that it is a matter of law in England that any sturgeon caught must be offered to the reigning King or Queen. Oddly enough, these fish aren’t prized so much for their meat as for their eggs. Caviar, anyone?Loch Ness Monster: OK, it may not exist and, if it does, it probably isn’t technically a fish, but it does live in fresh water. And even if you do manage to land one and live to tell about it, you’re going to have one hell of a time figuring out where to put the 35 foot long mount. But, can you imagine the fishing story you’d have? Personally, we just hope that anyone who gets their hook into Nessie has their boat insurance in order.

Most Memorable Movie Boats of All Time

We’ve all seen boats in movies and been inspired, awestruck, or terrified.

Movies can offer us a great escape from reality, and the boats we’ve seen in some movies are far from realistic! That’s the great thing about fiction, although some of these boats were all too real.

The Titanic – Obviously, everyone has heard of this one – both the movie and the ocean liner, which sank in near freezing waters in the Atlantic Ocean on April 14, 1912. This tragedy is proof that while boat insurance is a must-have, it can’t fix everything in the case of disaster. For the filming, a full-size model of the ship was constructed in a 17 million gallon tank on 40 acres of waterfront near Playas de Rosarito in Mexico. Only the starboard side of the constructed set was completed, which required some scenes to be reversed to allow for the appearance of the port side of the ship.Orca – You may not remember the name, but you surely will remember this boat, which appeared in the original Jaws movie in 1975. Much of the film takes place on board the Orca, and in the end, it’s tragically destroyed by the great white in one of the scariest movie scenes of all time. “Well, this is not a boat accident! And it wasn’t any propeller; and it wasn’t any coral reef; and it wasn’t Jack the Ripper! It was a shark.” – Matt Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss. The Black Pearl – This is the fantastical ship from the famous movie trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean. As legend has it, Captain Sparrow was commissioned to sail the ship (then named the Wicked Wench) and its cargo from the West Indies to the Caribbean. After learning, however, that the “cargo” was West African slaves, Sparrow released them and in his rage the ship’s owner, Lord Cutler Beckett had the ship sunk. After serving out his prison term, Sparrow returned to raise the Wench, but his early attempts failed. It was only after receiving assistance from Davy Jones that the ship could be resurrected. The two agreed that Sparrow would owe Jones his soul after 13 years of captaining the ship, which he christened, The Black Pearl. The Red October – The starring role in the 1990 film, The Hunt For Red October was played by this massive (although wholly fictitious) Soviet submarine. Who can forget Sean Connery as Captain Marko Ramius or Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan in this blockbuster hit? “The hard part about playing chicken is knowin’ when to flinch.” – Capt. Bart Mancuso, played by Scott Glenn.Das Boot – This film was one of the most expensive German films of all time, and the bulk of the film’s $15 million budget was spent constructing U-boats. Three different scale models were built for different shots and special effects, the largest of which was 35 feet. On that model, modified Ken dolls acted as stand-ins for human actors.

BF055: VanDam Holds Off Horton On Kentucky Lake

The final day of the Bassmaster Elite Bluegrass Brawl on Kentucky Lake was billed as "The Greatest There Was vs. The Greatest There Is" or "Rick Clunn vs. Kevin VanDam." But as it turned out, that shootout never materialized. Instead, VanDam faltered, Clunn stumbled, and Timmy Horton seemingly came out of nowhere to pass Rick and challenge Kevin.

In the end, VanDam had enough for the victory, but Horton had a great time making him sweat it out. We'll hear from both of them in this episode.

Our 2nd Houseboat Show - we love seeing new and used boats

by Reinold
(Russellville, AR)

The 2010 ON WATER Houseboat Show

The 2010 ON WATER Houseboat Show

We just returned from the Houseboat Expo on the water at the State Dock on Lake Cumberland. It's our 2nd year for that show and we always love seeing new and old boats.

This show was smaller than last years, but with the economy and with manufactures closing like Sumerset and Skipperliner, you expect the show to take a hit, too. Love the boats that were there and appreciate the vendors.

Wish to see some like the Incolet toilet or "Fire in the Hole" as it's know on the docks. We walked the docks and a couple of the used boats had open house so you could see their boats.

Another marina, Cave Springs, had it's 1st annual open house of houseboats for sale by owner and that was great!! There was @ 15 to 20 boats open for you to explore and some sold on the spot. What a great idea, as we love going and will go again if they continue the show.

Until next years show, Reinold, Russellville, AR

My Trip to Algonquin National Park

Though I’ve lived in Ontario for a while now I’ve never been to Algonquin National Park, that is until last week when two friends and I planned a four day canoe trip through the park. With a few trips to MEC and Al Flaherty’s to pick up some essential new gear we headed out early saturday morning for a three our drive north to the portage store where we would rent our canoe and the voyage would begin.

The trip we planned was pretty adventurous for first timers, but the route looked fairly easy to navigate from the map and I was sure that I could handle the water navigation. Sure enough, I never needed a GPS or even my trusty compass.

While I did bring my fishing gear, and even tried my hand at fishing 2-3 different lakes, there really was not enough time in the day to do any meaningful fishing. More often then not we were pushing pretty hard to make it to the next campsite with plenty of time to setup camp and explore the surrounding area. Next time I plan to spend two nights at one campsite so I can spend one day fishing and exploring.

Carrier Killers

Everyone knows that, since World War II, aircraft carriers are the biggest bad asses on the high seas. By far the largest warships in any country’s arsenal, these floating airstrips put the entire world within striking distance for the United States. Recently, though, it looks like the cost of boat insurance will have to go up for aircraft carriers due to a new threat from land.

Chinese Missiles Shift Power Balance

The Chinese have recently announced the development of their Dong Feng 21-D missile, dubbed the “carrier killer” for its alleged ability to hit a moving warship with enough explosive power to sink one of the big vessels. Experts have suggested if the Chinese missile can do what they claim it can, it could radically swing the balance of power in the Pacific.

By placing the United States’ 11 aircraft carriers in jeopardy, the Chinese have effectively denied us the virtually unlimited run of the Pacific Ocean that we have enjoyed since World War II. Up until now, our carriers could be positioned in a matter of days to allow fighter, bomber, and attack aircraft to reach literally anywhere in Asia or the Middle East.

Now They Want a Carrier, Too

Additionally, the Chinese have begun work on their own aircraft carrier, their first. While we doubt the Communist country will be shopping around for boat insurance on their flat top, we are reasonably sure that the boat will create some tension floating in the Pacific Ocean.

While the Chinese government has shown interest in obtaining an aircraft carrier since the early 1970s, the emerging country’s economy is only now allowing them to actually field one. The carrier currently under construction is expected to be finished and in the water in 2015.

Welcome Back to 1985

Of course, the United States has had the ability to hit a moving ship with a guided missile since the mid-1980s. The Trident missile is one of the underappreciated, almost unsung heroes of the Cold War. The Soviet Union had been working on a similar missile, but abandoned the idea of creating a land based missile which could hit a moving ship as impractical, if not impossible. When the United States actually developed one, it was a quiet game changer.

So, what will the balance of power look like on the high seas in the coming decades? No one can know for sure, but we suppose that it will look different than it has in the past several decades. History clearly shows us that no one holds power at sea forever. Just ask the Brits.
