Oregon Demands New Boat Permits

Leave it to the politicians in the state of Oregon to penalize its small boat owners for something they didn’t do. The state of Oregon is now making it mandatory for people who own kayaks, canoes and other types of unregistered, non-motorized boats pay a fee of $5 for a permit. This is disconcerting to some residents, given that these boats don’t even need to have boat insurance to operate, and now they suddenly need to be licensed.

The money from the permit is earmarked for a specific purpose. In fact, the permit even has a friendly-sounding name that makes the boat owner feel as if they’re somehow doing a world of good for the waterways of Oregon: the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Permit.

While the name might bring to mind dramatic speeches from Bill Paxton about how we’re not going to just go quietly into that goodnight, or images of Will Smith dragging an alien body across the desert, it’s nothing so interesting. The fee is to prevent non-native plant and animal introductions into Oregon.

It’s required that one of these permits is carried on each and every boat on public waterways. There aren’t any restrictions on the name for the permit holder, or whether or not its transferrable. Also, boaters that are under the age of 14 years old are exempt from having to have one.

The rules for this permit were put in place this year, after the legislation from the Oregon Legislature went into effect. To date, over 4,400 permits have been sold. The Marine Board’s director expect to get compliance somewhere around 80 to 85 percent this summer.

As far as the next month or so goes, marine patrols are still only given warnings that boaters must have one of these permits. After Memorial Day rolls around, however, the

I found this video earlier today on Vimeo while looking for new fishing videos, and found a guy right here in Toronto! “KokeMachine” is a local Torontonian fisherman, and he’s definitely got attitude- something we appreciate around here. The overall editing and story is pretty good, though it still has a very raw feel, coloured with foul language feel- and the animations of his gear are hilarious. I like it.

In this video he walks down to the harbor front, looks to me like Coronation Park, where he catches a huge carp and an amazing (though out-of-season) Toronto Smallmouth Bass! Check it out! Warning! Foul language ahead.

Holy shit I know exactly where that spot is – never in my life would I have ever tried fishing there. Huge smallmouth, funny vid.

The whole area near the Ex is top notch my friend! LOTS of different species around too!

“one million poundsss!”

Clive Mathias on April 22nd, 2010 @ 10:17 pm jwm

The harbor front has a ton of good fishing. Just remember to bring a net, and fish responsibly. In many areas the distance from where youre standing, to the water can be several feet. You might not be able to land the fish by hand.

Nice smallie! And yeah, definitely need a net.

Thanks dudes! Yeah, I like that spot because it’s just straight down from my house. There’s always massive carp down there and I spent a few good weeks last summer trying to fool another one. They are a little sharper than I first imagined though and I have yet to pull another out.

I’ve heard word about spring time pike in and around the marinas in the harbor and I’m looking forward trying out some dead baiting (British Style!!) when the season opens again.

Kokemachine on April 23rd, 2010 @ 11:47 am jwm

Kokemachine, you should join us on the Toronto Islands some time this spring!

Jonathon Marshall on April 23rd, 2010 @ 1:39 pm Mark Ruddick

Awesome video. I love urban fishing videos.

Mark Ruddick on April 23rd, 2010 @ 1:42 pm Kokemachine

I like that idea. I went out to the islands last spring and caught a bowfin. I’ve heard there are lots of pike out there. I’d like to give that a shot. Pike season is just over the horizon, so let’s set it up!

I’m going to be heading up to Port Severn for the walleye/pike opener and I’m totally stoked!

Amazing Billfish Feeding Video

">

I know you’re probably getting ready for bed, but I had to post this video from Guy Harvey. It’s absolutely heart pounding! This is video proof that marlin and sailfish using their bills to stun baitfish when feeding, not to mention up close and personal! I don’t know if this is the first video ever, but it’s the first video I’ve ever seen of this quality.
